It's Wednesday

It's Wednesday, which means it's been nearly 4.5 days since my last post so I think I am well overdue. Besides, it's gloomy outside and it's slow at work, so I have some free time on my hands. I have nothing significant to report on, but here are some things I have been thinking about as well as some comments on questions people have asked me:

1. Fighting in relationships does not make you normal. This is all about how people deal with conflict and everyone deals with it differently. I used to think that there was something wrong with Cameron and I because we never fight, but then I realized that we just have a different way of handling our differences and conflicts... it's called talking. It is neither right nor wrong, better or worse. Just different. In addition, this just goes back to all the times I have said that we need not compare our relationships to others and judge their normalcy and healthiness according to other people. It can really only be judged by how you feel. So if you don't fight with your significant other, be not alarmed. If you do and it works for you, fantastic. Enough said.

2. Kohlrabi... what is this item? Joining this CSA has done wonders for my love of good food and it has also introduced me to some new items. This week we received turnips and kohlrabi among other more well known items in the greens department. I know very little about turnips and absolutely nothing about kohlrabi, but thanks to the internet I am receiving some limited education and plan to dive right in and try it. It's a popular item in Europe and we all know that Europeans know what's up when it comes to cooking. Kohlrabi and carrot slaw anyone?

3. This one is for Ann... eating healthy is something that happens in phases for me, as I think it does for most people. Starting out with one or two good choices such as whole wheat bread and fresh vegetables is a great way to start. The next thing I did was try to cut out processed foods that I don't really need or that I can get fresh. There are varying degrees of what people consider healthy eating and I may have gone farther than the normal health conscious Joe, but you have to decide what is most important to you and your family in terms of organic/non organic. Some things obviously don't matter that much, but there are certain things that are nutritionally changed by the way they are grown, fed, and/or harvested. That can affect your diet and other internal things. I don't claim to be an expert but there are lots of things you can do. Eat fruit instead of fruit snacks, buy real cheese instead of fake cheese, get organic eggs because the cholesterol and omega 3 fatty acids are better. I eat salad with almost every dinner because it is filling but also allows me to throw in a few extra vegetables in my diet while getting creative at the same time. Let me know if you want more specific info or recipes. As for exercise... just keep on doing it. Congrats on the St. George Marathon. That is a accomplishment, and I applaud anyone who has done one.

4. And finally... there are some cyclists in the park who are arrogant and inconsiderate, and they make me angry. They make me more angry than pedicabs and horse carriages that get in my way. Why? Because they should know better and they give all cyclists a bad rep. There is no reason why they need to go screaming by at 27 miles an hour whistling at people to get out of the way like we are some lesser form of athlete because we don't have an ego problem. It's true that cyclists and runners alike feel like the park is there for them and both are correct. However, there is still a code of decency and courtesy that should be abided by all people lest an accident happens and ruins everyone's day.

I actually have stopped and enjoyed your writing a few times. Also, I would love to visit New York one of these days.

My brother-n-law Eric, and his wife Melinda are going in October. Did you know her from school!? (Melinda Ryne?) I told her I was jealous of her too. I will go some day.

Melinda Ryne??? That sounds so familiar. I am sure I knew her or was acquainted. Good for them... October is a good month to visit.

Nikki - your picture is so fun of you and Cameron. I love reading all of your positive posts about how happy you guys are being married now. Really they are inspiring. Sometimes I feel like I get so wrapped up in my everyday hectic life that I forget that when Chris and I were first married that our lives revolved around each other and nothing else seemed to matter! Your posts help remind me of those fabulous days. Of course life just gets better - just more busy!

Nikki,
Thanks so much for the help. And what can I say? You inspired me. I bought my first bags of dried pineapple and craisins on Monday! I'll keep working on weeding things out and bringing better foods in. I love salads too! I crave them. My problem is that neither Brian nor the kids like salad at all and so when I make salads, they always get wasted. I can't really save the leftovers because you know how leftover salad gets...

When you buy greens and other salad stuff and you know you are the only one who will eat it, make smaller salads. That way the stuff will usually last a week so long as it isn't mixed together with dressing on top. I have perfected the salad for 2. We never have salad leftovers, but I always have lots of stuff to make them... Also, if you like hummus, it's easy to make and is good with pitas and raw veggies. It's a good snack, healthy and often filling :)
