Sunday in the Park

On Wednesday night, Cameron and I went to see Sunday in the Park with George, a Sondheim musical put on by the Roundabout Theatre Company. They usually put on fantastic performances such as Pygmalion starring Claire Danes, which we saw in December. It's a play about George Seurat, the French pointillism painter of the late nineteenth century and the neo-impressionism period, and his famous painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, which is at the Art Institute of Chicago. It happens to be one of my favorite paintings.

It was an interesting play, completely fictional, that tells the story of George and the subjects he used to paint this masterpiece. In some ways it's a tragic story of an artist so obsessed with his work that he neglects his life, relationships, etc. I think that is a common plight of artistic geniuses. The performers were magnificent, and all in all it was a pretty good show. If you have a chance to get tickets, I would recommend it but it isn't playing for long.

I heard about this a while ago...but had forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. I love Seurat.
